Pet Furniture Review: Litter Box Enclosure
Show me a happy cat parent, and I’ll show you someone who has scored a solution to effectively concealing their litter box. No one, I mean NO ONE wants a cat litter box parked in an open area, not even the cat. For years, I’d struggled (yes, the struggle is real) with litter box enclosure…finally forfeiting an entire closet to the cause. To that, you say, “She must REALLY LOVE her cats to relinquish that kind of storage space!” Yes, yes, I do. We love our cats, but what do I love more? Litter box quarantine. I don’t want to smell the stuff, see the tootsie rolls, hear the scratching or feel the mutinous litter scattered under my feet.
So this may or may not be a problem for you…but if it is, fear no more. The pet furniture industry has heard our cries of help, and are responding with ingenuity and practicality.
Here are some bestselling items on the market today for your review.
Merry Products Nightstand Pet House/Cat Litter Box Cover
I’m a light sleeper myself and would personally want to distance the litter box as far away from my sleeping quarters as possible. Midnight scratchy-scratchy twelve inches from my pillow would be at very least annoying, not to mention that any after-odor would have to be powerfully contained. However, that’s just me…and not to say this has to be used in YOUR bedroom. Actually, placing this in the bedroom of an unwanted guest might shorten the visit by a couple days. Just a thought.
Above all, the critical reviews noted poor quality construction and material as a problem, as well as the interior being too small to confine a “busy” cat.
Overall though, 70% of Amazon reviews were four stars and up. They enjoyed the look of the product, their cats were receptive to use, and it integrated well with the decor. A popular customer suggestion of caulking seams and lining the interior with plastic seemed well-received, and this solution countered the most critical reviews of urine absorption and mess due to “misses”.

Petsfit Espresso Double-Decker Pet House Litter Box Enclosure Night Stand
For those kitties who love apartment life, enter the multifunctional double-decker pet house/litter box enclosure/night stand. Wow…so many uses…what else can it do?
Cats access the inside through a hole in the top front door panel. The litter box may only be placed in the bottom compartment and is reachable through a hole at the back of the shelf.
88% of the Amazon reviews were 4 stars and up on this product. Customers cited great decorative appearance, good odor and litter containment and successful dog deterrent.
Critical reviews included poor quality control and assembly instructions, weak magnet latch on front door, and rejection of the cat to the design. According to the manufacturer, this is designed for small to medium cats only (although a couple customers indicated their 20 lb cat could use it). It is recommended that you measure your litter pan to ensure a good fit.

Good Pet Stuff Company Hidden Cat Litter Box
Novel idea, this one…disguising the litter box as a terra cotta planter. It screws open in half for cleaning, has a nest-like opening at the top for the included dust and odor filter (which can be covered with Spanish moss or decorative rocks), with a hole to insert the faux plant. According to the customer suggestions, it will accommodate a Little Giant round litter pan, but litter may be added directly to the planter.
Among the positive reviews, customers noted the size to be plenty for one cat, and enough for two, and their cats were receptive to the box. For some, the material was lightweight, easy to clean and even paintable to match decor. Too heavy and the planter when filled with litter would be hard to lift or relocate – so in my opinion, lightweight is a bonus. The planter also may be turned with the entrance away from viewing, directing the litter scatter away.
While some customers noted the pot was easy to twist and disassemble for cleaning, others complained the tracks would not match up making it difficult to reassemble. And for those with particularly mischievous cats, the faux plant did not last long; however, many decided to be creative and add their own decorative faux foliage.
Size/Weight:. Assembled: H 19” – L 19” – W 14” (42″ with plant). Weight: 5.9lb
Color: Terra Cotta

Designer Catbox Litter Box Enclosure
Devised to foil even the cleverest treat-seeking doggie, this enclosure employs a toy chest design with staggered openings and dual compartments – one for the litter box – and one as a pass-through to help dissipate any remaining litter on kitty’s tootsies. The divider panel may also be removed for larger cats.
Of the 780 Amazon reviews, 63% were 4 stars and up. Customers praised the aesthetics, ease of cleaning and doggie-deterrent design. Of the negative reviews, the prefab controls, assembly issues, materials and hardware quality (especially the hinges and screws) were in question. As with all wood or MDF-constructed materials, cat urine will cause damage to the product…so precautions, like lining edges with plastic and caulking seams, were recommended by purchasers.

Refined Feline Refined Litter Box
The Refined Litter Box has a single-compartment, front access cabinet design, with a top drawer for storage.
It comes in two sizes: large for standard to jumbo litter pan, while the extra large size will accommodate electric auto-clean litter box models, with a rear hole for the cord. Both models include a high-walled slide out plastic liner tray, rear ventilation panels and the option for left or right entry access. Not included are carbon filters for the ventilation panels, a grille ramp (litter catcher), and separate litter box. The litter catch will set you back another $40 or so.
There were 119 Amazon and 185 Overstock customers reviewing this product. The positive reviews complimented the value in design and aesthetics, while the negatives were very consistently reporting bad build quality, poor instructions and cheaply made materials and hardware. Seems conflicting, yes? Also, Overstock’s advertising of the pictured product “starting at $36.99” came under fire as that low price was for the litter catch only, while the entire product, cabinet and all, was displayed. So don’t be swayed by that low price.

Large Litter Box Hider
A much more expensive option, this cabinet is of a modern design; with chrome-plated hardware and a removable top for access. Inside, a hook is mounted for litter scoop storage.
The manufacturer indicates the high-pressure laminate is easier to wipe down, and will not damage as easily when exposed to urine spray as will other materials. That seemed to be one of the biggest overall complaints with other products. The overall appearance, design, assembly and quality were praised but the price seemed steep for some. Others reported it was too small, causing issues with kitty access, spraying and misses.
Personally, I would demand more of a product in a higher price range – more benefits – like storage, litter tracking solutions, larger size, better aesthetics, plastic lining, etc., now that I’ve seen what others have experienced.
Size/Weight: 21.5 x 18.5 x 20.8 inches, 53.6 lbs
Interior dimensions: 20″ L 17″W 17.5″ H. Fits standard to large litter pans
