It’s officially scarf, slipper and favorite-fuzzy-socks weather. Yes, you know those socks, like the red comfy ones I’m wearing right now with white polka dots, green toes, and grippies on the bottom. In my house, when these socks emerge from the back of the drawer, the heater in the house is firing up – it’s just that time of year.
For me, coziness is more than temperature, it’s comfort and ambiance. Often with heat comes dryness, and with dryness comes flaky skin and nosebleeds. Both unpleasant, yes. Not that a heater can defy natural science, but infrared technology helps maintain moisture and air comfort. Here’s a video on how this works.
Speaking as someone without a fireplace in the home, at times I do miss the licking flames and glowing embers – it’s part of the wintertime experience. Electric heating is an attractive alternative, and with the ease of use, portability and features, electric fireplace heating can provide a supplemental zoned heat source – that is decorative as well – almost anywhere in the home.
Couple that with a hot drink, a dog snuggle-snoozing at your feet and a great book. Are you with me?
Duraflame has been in operation for over 50 years; beginning with a fire log – a product created in an effort to recycle sawdust waste – a byproduct from their pencil manufacturing business. Since that time, Duraflame has continued to provide innovative and sustainable fire-related products, including electric infrared heaters and stoves.
The Duraflame 3D Infrared Electric Fireplace Stove with Remote Control – DFI-5010, is a freestanding, electric infrared heater that may be used to supplement existing heat sources in almost any room of the home.
Outputting 5200 BTUs, this model boasts a heating area of up to 1000 SF. Since the technology is infrared, the housing does not heat to the touch, thus making in-home use safer for children and pets (and anyone else who doesn’t want to be burned!). Comparatively, manufacturers publish a running cost for gas fireplaces at $.23/hour; and for zone heating, electric may run half that cost (of course, depending on the relative price of energy where you live).
Traditionally-styled, this piece is of metal, with heavy plastic legs. I was surprised the legs were made of plastic, but could find no complaints from verified purchasers about this – in fact, one customer preferred the plastic to a heavy metal which would have marred her floor. The only assembly requirements are the legs, which are provided and easily screwed to the housing. Being electric, it requires no venting or lines – just an electrical outlet – and it is ready to heat safely, without emissions. Beveled glass on both sides and the operable doors allow for multiple-angle viewing of the realistic 3D flames and glowing embers, and the unit may also run the flame presentation without heat for visual effect.
Temperature, flame (five options) and timer settings (auto shut-off, 30 min to 9 hours) can be controlled with the included remote (requires 2 AAA batteries, sold separately), or directly from the unit panel.
Pros & Cons
There were 352 customer reviews on Amazon.com, 79% 5 stars, 13% 4 stars, 3% 3 stars, 2% 2 stars, 3% 1 star.
Of the positive reviews, customers found the product to be/have:
- Useful for zone or supplemental heating
- Attractive design

- Realistic flame
- Sturdy, yet lightweight and portable
Of the negative reviews, customers found the product to be/have:
- Poorly designed – temperature readout not visible with door closed
- Loud with heater function operating
- Not sufficient to warm as expected
- Not as durable with months of frequent operation
Considering the many reviews on this product, the small percentage of negative reviews may indicate the product performs largely as expected, especially when used as advised by the manufacturer.
Tip: When viewing product listings on Amazon, please double-check the product model against the photographs, as listings also reference a smaller item, the DFI-8511-01, smaller size, different style, with the heat output underneath the door.
Other than the bronze and black models, I found it impossible to locate a sales channel for the other finishes previously offered by the manufacturer (cinnamon -03, cream -04 and pistachio -06), so I believe they may be discontinued. The French Gray, DFI-8511-01, is currently available via the same Amazon seller, Electric Fireplaces Direct, who offers the Bronze, DFI-8511-02. However, I was able to locate other models in alternative colors and price points from this same seller.
